I hadn’t intended to post any updates about the San Diego Padres until the mid-July All-Star break when I will write my annual mid-season evaluation. Before the season began, I had predicted the Pads would have a lackluster .500 campaign and they’re currently right on track with a record of 18-18.
However . . . with Manny Machado successfully recovering from elbow surgery and moving back to 3B, the Pads had a glaring weakness at the DH spot. The Padres’ General Manager, A.J. Preller, just made a bold move by acquiring Luis Arráez from the struggling Florida Marlins. This is big, folks. Arráez is the reigning MLB batting champion for both 2022 (.316) and 2023 (.354). He is definitely no slugger with only 24 HRs in 5.5 seasons. The 27YO Venezuelan is a Tony Gwynn-type, “Punch and Judy” singles hitter. However, he will get his hits and get on base.
Last night, in his first appearance in a Padres’ uniform against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arráez went 4 for 6. In 55 seasons of San Diego baseball, Arráez is the first Padre to collect 4 hits in their debut.
Arráez’ presence in the line-up “should” motivate all of the Padres hitters to up their game. While the addition of Arráez will not be enough to position the Pads to challenge the Blue Bums for the NL West pennant, it could tip the scales enough to make them viable competitors for a Wild Card slot.
